Hmm, I keep mentioning a few 24 Hours Calgary articles that I need to put up and it appears I don't have a bunch of the .pdf's on my hard drive. Since 24 Hours is only print and not archived online, they're all pretty much gone. But honestly, it's mostly Calgary-specific stuff so it's no great loss, unless of course you're from Calgary.
Anyway, some of them were re-worked and are posted on SoundProof every now and then, so not all is lost. I do have one .pdf that I didn't lose which I'll post soon, and in the meantime, here's one of mine that SoundProof posted on Electric Six earlier this week:

NXNE 2010 - Mudhoney, X
Alright, so here is the first of the NXNE live reviews from a few weeks back. I got to see late 80's Sub Pop Seattle band Mudhoney and the legendary LA punks X, back to back at Yonge and Dundas, which is kind of growing on me as a concert venue.

Stream: new Broken Social Scene songs!
Maybe one day I'll feel differently, but I love publicists. They just send things to you. It's nice.
Speaking of, I was sent a sampler so you, my loyal reader(s?) can hear a few songs from the new Broken Social Scene album - Forgiveness Rock Record - out on Arts & Crafts, May 4th.
There's the "World Sick" single you've probably already heard, and two others. I actually like all three songs, so hopefully this will be better than their self-titled piece of poop from a few years back.
I still love them, poop and all.
I'm sure this will be popping up everywhere soon, and you should absolutely spread the word and embed it wherever you want......but you saw it here first damnit!

24 Hours article - God Made ME Funky
Just like almost every other week, here's an article I wrote that 24 Hours Calgary published a month ago. This one was on the Toronto ten-piece nu-funk band God Made ME Funky shortly before they played at the Olympics. The dude I interviewed for this is the rapper in those "There's No Place Like This" Ontario commercials (He's the guy saying, among other things "I'm in Ontario y'all!").All joking aside, their CD is pretty solid and I hear they put on a killer live show. Also, guy was a great interview.
View the article after the jump - I'm not going to type it up this time so someone let me know if it is hard to read, and I'll type it up.

The last of CMW for me - Melissa Auf der Maur, Hot Hot Heat
Links to the last batch of my CMW live reviews.... Not much else to say, in a nutshell it was different variations on fun and rain.I'll post again soon, but not too soon!
Melissa Auf der Maur @ Horseshoe Tavern

Even more CMW - The Ghost Is Dancing, The Dudes
CMW is over, for me. Last night I saw Joanna Newsom and intended to perhaps write a review for it, but ended up deciding to just enjoy it, turn off my mind a little bit. I'm glad I did, my short review will be this - Joanna Newsom is an magical artist to see live (or hear in any capacity really).
Anyway, two more of my reviews have been put up, and the links are below. Two more will be up on SoundProof soon - Melissa Auf der Maur and Hot Hot Heat. Any of these photos from these shows are by the very talented Dave MacIntyre.

Fucked Up @ El Mocambo (CMW)

On my first night of Canadian Music Week I got to review a quiet little show by a quaint little band called Fucked Up. Since my language immediately goes out the window when discussing this band, let me just say it was fucking awesome.
Click here for the live review.
There are many more to come. Some time tonight or tomorrow my reviews will be posted for Lief Vollebekk, Still Life Still and Ghost Is Dancing. Now I just need to finish them....

The Dudes - 24 Hours story
This is an article I did on The Dudes.
This came out in 24 Hours Calgary exactly a month ago. It's one of the better interviews I've done. A ringing endorsement. Also, the band is great, I reviewed their album late last year, and will be covering their show at The Horseshoe for CMW on Friday.
And lastly, I'll be covering 3 days of Canadian Music Week starting tonight - March 10th with Fucked Up at the El Mocambo. Saturday I'm taking off from CMW to see Joanna Newsom. There will be a review for that as well.
It's going to be a busy week. To use Nathan Rabin's catchphrase, I will "remain, as always, cautiously optimistic."

Another 24 Article - John Wort Hannam
My first actually published article for 24 Hours Calgary was on this Albertan singer songwriter called John Wort Hannam. He's actually really good, and i seriously recommend his album Queen's Hotel. You can find links and read the article by clicking "read more" below, I have included a screenshot as well.

The New Black
As I stated before, I have been writing articles for 24 Hours Calgary. I can't post them anywhere until some time has passed so they'll always be posted on this blog like a month or two after the fact. This is the first that I'm posting here. It's from the beginning of January, and it's a piece about a punk rock youth center in Calgary called The New Black.

By Divine Right feature up on SoundProof!
So, two weeks ago I got to speak on the phone with one of my adolescent heroes, Jose Miguel Contreras of By Divine Right, while he hung out in his kitchen with his wife (the amazing Lily Frost) and their toddler making guacamole. This conversation was turned into a feature article for SoundProof and here it is:

No updates in almost two months? Unacceptable behaviour...
My apologies for not updating in almost two months. I've been working with SoundProof as an associate editor for 24 Hours Magazine in Calgary and can't post that stuff here right now. I think I may be able to post screenshots of the articles I've been doing in the future but not right now because it doesn't belong to me :(
I'll try to write on here a little more just for the hell of it during stretches like this where I'm not writing for SoundProof as much. Soon I'll be doing a blog-exclusive review of the new Joanna Newsom triple disc Have One On Me, you know, once it's sunk in a little more. I'll also be covering Canadian Music Week with SoundProof and a few other things so this lack of activity should not occur in the near future.
Thanks go out to anyone checking out my humble blog!
